The San Francisco bay area has many areas cherished by its residents, and Bay Farm Island is one considered to have more than a touch of class.  It part of the City of Alameda; separated by an estuary and connected by drawbridges.  Bay Farm Island is a much sought after location.  The former farmland, once referred to as “Cow Island” by Jack London, offers affluent neighborhoods and major adult recreation with a 36 hole championship golf course (Chuck Corica Golf Complex) and municipal links, as well.  The island boasts several parks, quiet lagoons, and its perimeter parks are designated as a greenbelt area.  The view of Oakland and San Francisco skylines on a sunny day is unparalleled.  Bay Farm Island is the world headquarters of the Oakland Raiders, a technologic park, model airplane field, and a ferry harbor.  Housing developments are booming.

 

This area demonstrates no inertia in the ideas and plan implementation of the city.  Alameda was once a peninsula, then divided to create an island.  Bay Farm Island was an island and later, through land reclamation, became a peninsula adjacent to the Oakland Airport.

 

An interesting footnote is the Bay Farm Island Bridge that spans the San Leandro Bay inlet to the Oakland Estuary.  It is the longest draw bridge in the County, at just about 1000 feet in length.  The movable span portion of the bridge is approximately 125 feet in length For those of the technical persuasion:  the span is a 125 foot single leaf bascule bridge. Bay Farm Island, in addition to the parks and such, has even more for Nature lovers.  The mud flats on the north and west shores are a major shorebird concentration in the Bay area; and an attraction for ornithologists from all over.  Even more impressive are the miles of paths popular with bikers and skaters.
